Crochet for Stress Relief: A Simple Way to Feel Calmer

If there’s one thing I’ve learned as a Youth Services librarian, it’s that stress can sneak into even the most joyful parts of the job. Between planning programs for every age group, ordering new materials, prepping the next summer reading theme, and the never-ending list of “just one more thing,” it’s easy to feel stretched thin. And when that stress builds, it becomes harder to show up with the warmth and creativity our kids and teens deserve.

One of the most reliable ways I decompress after a long day is through crafting. Over the years I’ve dabbled in everything from diamond painting to zentangles, but the craft that has truly stayed with me lately is crochet. Crochet has become my soft landing place — a comforting ritual that helps me reset, slow down, and reconnect with myself.

My Crochet Story

My crochet journey actually started when I was little. My grandma was a wonderful crocheter, and one of the gifts she gave all her grandkids was teaching us how to crochet. I still vividly remember learning the chain stitch and then — in true grandma fashion — jumping straight into the double crochet, completely skipping the “standard” learning order of single crochet and half double crochet. It made more sense years later, but at the time I just thought it was magic that yarn could turn into something new in my hands.

As I grew up, crochet came in and out of my life, but it has always been there when I needed it. I’ve made baby blankets, scarves, and plenty of cozy throws, but my favorite recent projects have been cardigans. In the last year alone I finished three and even started a special one for my mom for Christmas. There’s just something about wearing something you made with your own hands that feels incredibly grounding and gratifying.

Next up on my hook? A temperature blanket for 2026 — a project I’ve been dreaming about for a while. I love the idea of recording daily temperatures in color and watching a year slowly unfold one stitch at a time.

How Crochet Eases Stress and Anxiety

Crochet isn’t just fun — it’s genuinely therapeutic. According to Betty Houtman and the Anxiety Resource Center, crochet helps reduce stress in several ways, many of which I feel firsthand every time I sit down with my yarn:

  • Repetitive motion calms the brain, almost like a moving meditation.
  • The hand movements distract the mind, giving anxious thoughts less space to spiral.
  • Crocheting creates a comfortable “bubble” of personal space as your hands come together around your work.
  • It’s a social craft that doesn’t demand interaction — perfect for introverts or anyone who wants community without pressure.
  • You can crochet anywhere, whether you’re at home, on break, or waiting for a meeting to start.
  • Yarn provides sensory comfort through its colors, textures, and warmth.
  • Repetitive movement releases serotonin, boosting both mood and calmness.

On top of all that, finishing a project brings a wonderful sense of accomplishment — something that can be hard to find when your to-do list resets daily. And if you want to go beyond personal enjoyment, crochet can even become a small side hustle or gift-making powerhouse. Who doesn’t love a hobby that relaxes you and has practical perks?

Conclusion

In the whirlwind world of library work, especially youth services, having a grounding practice is essential. Crochet has become that practice for me — a way to soothe my mind, slow my breathing, and feel connected to creativity again. Whether I’m stitching a sleeve or just making a quick granny square, each moment with my hook helps me find a little more balance in my day.

If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed, stretched thin, or simply craving a hobby that brings more calm than chaos, crochet might be exactly what you need.
